The white ring is minerals, not dirt.

It's Not Rust. It's Your Water.

How to clean a bathroom sink and faucet, and why that white ring keeps coming back.

Clean white bathroom sink with a brass faucet and clear counter.
That white ring is minerals, not dirt.

The sink is one of the most-used spots in the house, and it shows: toothpaste flecks, soap scum, and a white ring around the faucet that never seems to go away.

That ring isn't grime. It's mineral buildup from the water itself, and it comes off with something you probably already have.

Clear the counter first

Move soap, toothbrushes, and anything else off the counter and out of the sink.

Why? You can't clean under something, and a cluttered counter is where cleaner gets wiped around instead of wiped up.

Soak the mineral buildup

Wrapped on, not just sprayed.

Soak a cloth or paper towel in plain white vinegar and wrap it around the faucet base and the spout opening. Let it sit for 15 minutes.

Why? Vinegar dissolves mineral deposits without scrubbing. Wrapping it against the buildup keeps the vinegar in contact instead of running off.

Scrub the basin

Don't forget the overflow hole.

Scrub the sink basin with a soft brush or sponge and a bathroom cleaner, paying attention to the overflow hole and around the drain.

Why? The overflow hole is a common spot for grime to collect, and it's easy to miss because it's small.

Clean the drain stopper

It comes out further than you'd think.

Lift out the drain stopper if it comes out, and wipe off the hair and soap film that collects on it.

Why? The stopper sits right where everything drains through, so it collects more than the rest of the sink.

Wipe the faucet and handles last

Remove the vinegar cloth and wipe the faucet, spout, and handles with a clean, damp cloth.

Why? Hands touch the handles more than anywhere else in the room, so they're saved for a final, clean pass.

Short on energy today?

Just wrap the faucet in a vinegar-soaked cloth for a few minutes and rinse it off. That's enough for now.

Treat the cause, not the stain

A sink teaches you to treat causes, not just symptoms. Once you know a spot is mineral, not dirt, you stop scrubbing and start soaking, and the job gets easier.

Fifteen minutes of soaking does what scrubbing never could.
